Sorting Out The SuperNanny

The power of entertainment, producers and media have combined to create a fantasy of proper child and parent coaching known as SuperNanny, ABC’s hot TV show.

Proving Hollywood is not even skin deep in its approach to professional parenting, Jo Frost, the star of Super Nanny, makes no bones about her lack of qualifications: she is not a pediatrician, psychologist or any professional. She is also not a mom. Not even married, although she wears a wedding band.

The problem is that Super Nanny purports to teach millions of parents how to raise kids and by the way, do so in just a few days with a single and simple-minded ‘behavior’ modification program e.g. it’s good behavior if the parent likes it.

How control is accomplished is even more ignorant of the damaging effects of techniques she preaches like ‘Time Out’ or excessive parental manipulation.
There is no reference to normalage appropriate or developmental milestones, nor even the slightest reference to psychological issues.

Here’s where I’m stepping in to ‘Sort out the SuperNanny’…

New Year’s Resolutions…Just Do It!

January of any year is famously all about promises.  At the beginning of the year we usually reflect on the last and resolve to change in the year ahead.  Change is good, it means we are moving forward and not feeling so stuck.  But, where I always get stuck is the ‘talking’ about change instead [...]

The Super Nanny is Wrong AGAIN!

Decided to check in on the Super Nanny show for this season after watching and commenting all last season.  I wanted to see if this year’s prime time show was educating parents in accurate and helpful information.  Much to my disappointment the show has not changed one single bit!
Supper Nanny starts out by labeling the [...]

Tips to Surviving Summer

Summer vacation… kids cannot wait and parents look forward to less structure and fun. But by the middle of July, the dreams of carefree summer fun seem to fade. Why?

Kids love to predict: they want to know what’s coming next so they can manage their behavior. Even though it sounds great to just relax, [...]

Want To Know Why You’re In a Bad Mood? Watch T.V.

Ever get up “on the wrong side of the bed” and don’t know why?
At one time or another just about everybody experiences not knowing why they feel the way they do.  Kids get even more confused than parents do about their feelings.  All kids behaviors are in response to some sort of feeling and most [...]

In Praise of Fathers

Fathers should be appreciated all year… not just on one day! While Father’s Day is a tremendous idea, we all need to affirm Dads for their significance every day of the year.
I come from a long line of fantastic fathering men. My grandfathers were both grand fathering me from birth to their deaths. My Dad, [...]

You Know I Love You Anyway

In celebration of Mother’s Day, I’d like to share a special poem with you that was given to me by a mom that I had been working with earlier this year. She was a new mommy having trouble adjusting to being a stay-at-home-mom after the birth of her second child. She came seeking guidelines in [...]

Super Nanny is Back!

Have you heard the news?  The Super Nanny season premier is Friday, today!  Who knows what this season will bring?  I am hoping some developmentally accurate information will be shared on the show.

The advertisement for the Super Nanny show again depicts the Super Nanny as someone every family needs for healthy parenting.  Parents, try to [...]

How Kids Feel when Parents Fight

ABC and NBC are flooding the T.V. market place with parenting advice.  Between the Super Nanny and The Baby Borrowers you’d think America’s parents don’t have clue about how to care for their own children.  Well I think that is insulting the intelligence of parents.  It makes me mad!

The teenagers that are trying to parent [...]

Do you have a strong-willed child? Sorting Out the SuperNanny…

Do you have a strong-willed child?  Super Nanny gave us a taste last night of how we label kids with this term.  There are tons of books out there on ‘strong willed’ kids.  But, have you ever seen a book on the strong willed parent?  I have never seen one, so I think not!
The truth [...]
