Elementary School Years

Here’s what Dr. Ann Corwin, The Parenting Doctor™, recommends about parenting the Elementary School years.

THE EXPRESSIVE SCHOOL AGE
“You’re soooo mean!” Ever hear these words out of your school age child? Kids in elementary school are able to express how they ‘feel’ with words now and do not hesitate to practice expressing themselves. This can be, to say the least, rather irritating to us as parents, but it is also an opportunity ‘to teach’ or discipline your child!

WHAT WOULD DR. ANN SAY?
Remember to ‘model’ for your kids how to express feelings in an appropriate way. So when you think someone says something mean to you as an adult express that to your child by telling them a story that might sound something like this…

“Today my friend said she didn’t like it when I was late to lunch and I’d better not be late again”! I thought that was so mean! But, I decided not to say, “You’re so mean”, but I took a big deep breath and turned around and walked away. That is how our family should act when we feel someone is being mean!

New Year’s Resolutions…Just Do It!

January of any year is famously all about promises.  At the beginning of the year we usually reflect on the last and resolve to change in the year ahead.  Change is good, it means we are moving forward and not feeling so stuck.  But, where I always get stuck is the ‘talking’ about change instead [...]

Do you believe…in Santa Claus?

My kids are five years apart, so by the time my second was born my first was in kindergarten and well on his way to having other kids opinions influence him.
I will never forget when he came home and told me that his friend Parker told him there was no Santa Claus.  The look on [...]

Do Six-Year Olds Need Zero Tolerance?

Six year olds are very smart and Zachary Christie is no exception.  But, they are also naïve because of their lack of experience and judgment.  Six year olds love to share, especially something new, love to tell stories and willingly show what they have to authority figures, like teachers and parents.  This is exactly what [...]
